Kickers, Opinions, and a Practical Response
Recently, a kicker on the Kansas City Chiefs made comments that went viral and started controversy. Like anything else, there are going to be people that wholeheartedly agree with him on one side, and wholeheartedly disagree with him on another side. Unfortunately, the reality is that everyone has an opinion, even if we find that opinion uncomfortable. We also have a right to endorse or revile that opinion.
It is at times like this that I ask myself: “What is my authority?”. Is my identity rooted in the opinion of an NFL kicker? Or is my identity rooted in the king Jesus? Is how I live shaped by the lordship of Jesus, or by the society that I find myself in? Ultimately, and what I hope you’ll get from this, is that our identity, value, and direction are determined by an all-knowing, all-loving, and all-present God.
The good news is that we do not have to care about what an NFL kicker thinks or says, because we know that we are cared for by the Lord Himself. Once again, that is good news! I am in no means condemning passionate conversations about topics and issues in our society, but I hope to encourage you to root yourself on the foundation of love that is found in the life of God as you do so.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, You who know the beginning from the end, we submit our struggles and our quarrels over to You. In a world where it can be easy to get caught up in controversy and hate, we root ourselves today in Your love, that we might have life and life to the full! This day, please lead us and guide us into that fullness of life, that we so desparately need. In Christ’s name, Amen.
